You’re not imagining it, and your internet provider probably isn’t the problem. You have dead zones — and in Roanoke Valley homes, they’re incredibly common.

What Causes Wi-Fi Dead Zones?
Wi-Fi is a radio signal, and like any radio signal, it weakens with distance and gets blocked by obstacles. The biggest culprits we see in local homes:
Building materials. Many homes in Roanoke, Salem, and Vinton were built with brick, plaster-and-lath walls, or metal ductwork — all of which absorb or reflect Wi-Fi signals. Why Wi-Fi Extenders Usually Disappoint
The first thing most people try is a cheap plug-in extender, and it’s usually a letdown. Extenders work by rebroadcasting your existing signal — which means they typically cut your speed in half, create a second network name you have to switch to manually, and only work well if they’re placed where the signal is already strong. If the extender sits in the dead zone, it’s just repeating a weak signal.
They can work for small, simple problems. But if you’re reading this article, your problem probably isn’t small or simple.
What Actually Fixes Dead Zones
Better router placement. Sometimes the fix is genuinely that easy — moving the router to a central, elevated, open location can transform coverage. It’s always the first thing we check.
A mesh Wi-Fi system. Mesh uses multiple coordinated nodes placed around your home, all broadcasting one seamless network. Your devices automatically connect to the strongest node as you move around. For most multi-story Roanoke homes, a properly placed mesh system eliminates dead zones entirely.
